RESUMO

The adsorption property of the costless green cellulose acetate (CA) was boosted by the dual modifications: inner modification by incorporating carboxylated graphene oxide (COOH-GO) into the CA spheres and outer modification by the surface modification of the COOH-GO@CA spheres by iminodiacetic acid (IDA) for removing Pb(II). The adsorption experiments of the Pb(II) proceeded in a batch mode to evaluate the adsorption property of the COOH-GO@CA@IDA spheres. The maximal Pb(II) adsorption capacity attained 613.30 mg/g within 90 min at pH = 5. The removal of Pb(II) reached its equilibrium within 20 min, and the removal % was almost 100% after 30 min at the low Pb(II) concentration. The Pb(II) adsorption mechanism was proposed according to the kinetics and isotherms studies; in addition, the zeta potential (ZP) measurements and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis defined the adsorption pathways. By comparing the XPS spectra of the authentic and used COOH-GO@CA@IDA, it was deduced that the contributed chemical adsorption pathways are Lewis acid-base, precipitation, and complexation. The zeta potential (ZP) measurements demonstrated the electrostatic interaction participation in adsorbing the cationic Pb(II) species onto the negatively charged spheres (ZP = 14.2 mV at pH = 5). The unique channel-like pores of the COOH-GO@CA@IDA spheres suggested the pore-filling mechanism of Pb(II). The promising adsorption results and the superb recyclability character of COOH-GO@CA@IDA enable it to extend of the bench scale to the industrial scale.

RESUMO

Nanotechnology holds significant promise for the development of novel and necessary products that enhance human health. Pharmacology and nanotechnology have contributed to developing advanced and highly effective drugs for cancer treatment and combating microbial infections. The microbiological effectiveness against the variety of examined microorganisms was assessed using the time killer curve, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), MIC techniques, and the agar well diffusion method. SEM was utilized to enhance the analysis of the mechanisms underlying the bio-interface interaction and intracellular localization of calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaONPs). The MTT test was used to examine the cytotoxicity of CaONP anticancer activity in various cancer cells, including colon, breast, and hepatic cells. The efficacy of CaONPs as an anticancer medication was elucidated by analyzing the gene expression of both treated and untreated cancer cells. MIC and MBC of CaONPs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis were 150, 150, 150, and 200 µg/ml, respectively. The MIC and MFC of CaONPs against Candida albicans were 200 µg/ml and 250 µg/ml, respectively. The IC50 values of various CaONPs vary depending on the type of cancer cells. The gene expression analysis of breast cancer cells undergoing treatment revealed the identification of several cancer-controlling genes, namely BAX, BCL2, P53, TERT, KRAS1, KRAS2, and RB1. The study demonstrated the notable antibacterial efficacy of CaONPs, highlighting their potential as cancer therapies.

RESUMO

The aggravated problem of lead pollution, especially in aquatic environments, necessitates the development of eminent adsorbents that could radically solve this environmental problem. Hence, a new composite was constructed based on iota carrageenan (i.Carr), graphene oxide (GO) and magnetite (Fe3O4) for removing noxious Pb2+ ions. The GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite was characterized by VSM, SEM, XPS, XRD, FTIR and Zeta potential. The removal of Pb2+ ions attained a quick equilibrium of almost 30 min with a removal efficiency reaching 93.68 %. The removal of Pb2+ was boosted significantly, in the order of GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:1) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:3) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(3:1). Moreover, acquired experimental data fitted the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model with a maximal monolayer adsorption capacity reached 440.05 mg/g. Notably, after five adsorption runs, the composite maintained its removal efficiency exceeding 74 %. The assumed adsorption mechanisms of Pb2+ onto GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr were complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base, and electrostatic attraction forces. Overall, the GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite elucidated the auspicious adsorbent criteria, comprising fast adsorption with high performance, ease-separation and tolerable recyclability, advising its feasible use to decontaminate water bodies from hazardous heavy metals.

RESUMO

A novel flower-like CuNiMn-LDH was synthesized and modified, to obtain a promising Fenton-like catalyst, Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH, with a remarkable degradation of Congo red (CR) utilizing H2O2 oxidant. The structural and morphological characteristics of Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH were analyzed via FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX, and SEM spectroscopy. In addition, the magnetic property and the surface's charge were defined via VSM and ZP analysis, respectively. Fenton-like experiments were implemented to investigate the aptness conditions for the Fenton-like degradation of CR; pH medium, catalyst dosage, H2O2 concentration, temperature, and the initial concentration of CR. The catalyst exhibited supreme degradation performance for CR to reach 90.9% within 30 min at pH 5 and 25 °C. Moreover, the Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH/H2O2 system revealed considerable activity when tested for different dyes since the degradation efficiencies of CV, MG, MB, MR, MO, and CR were 65.86, 70.76, 72.56, 75.54, 85.99, and 90.9%, respectively. Furthermore, the kinetic study elucidated that the CR degradation by the Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH/H2O2 system obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetic model. More importantly, the concrete results deduced the synergistic effect between the catalyst components, producing a continuous redox cycle consisting of five active metal species. Eventually, the quenching test and the mechanism study proposed the predominance of the radical mechanism pathway on the Fenton-like degradation of CR by the Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH/H2O2 system.

RESUMO

Water pollution is an aggravating dilemma that is extending around the world, threatening human survival. Strikingly, the notorious heavy metals like hexavalent chromium ions (Cr6+) cause environmental problems raising awareness of the essentials for finding feasible solutions. For this purpose, the self-floating Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads were prepared for removing Cr6+. The morphological, thermal, and composition characteristics of Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads were analyzed using XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, XPS, and zeta potential. Notably, the adsorption aptitude of Cr6+ was enhanced by raising the MWCNTs proportion to 5 wt% in microbeads. The Cr6+ adsorption onto Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models with qm of 384.62 mg/g at pH 3 and 298 K. The adsorption process was described kinetically by the pseudo-2nd order model. More importantly, the adsorption of Cr6+ onto Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA occurred via electrostatic interactions, inner/outer sphere complexations, ion exchange, and reduction mechanisms. Besides, the cycling test showed the remarkable reusability of Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA floatable microbeads for five subsequent cycles. The self-floating Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads in this work provide essential support for the potential applications for the remediation of heavy metals-containing wastewater.

RESUMO

Water pollution is a dreadful affair that has incessantly aggravated, exposing our planet to danger. In particular, the persistent nitro aromatic compound like nitrophenols causes anxiety to the researchers due to their hazardous impacts, excessive usage, and removal difficulty. For this purpose, a novel multi-featured composite was constructed based on κ-Carrageenan (κ-Carr), MOF (MIL-125(Ti)), and magnetic Fe3O4 for efficient adsorptive removal of o-nitrophenol (o-NP). Interestingly, BET measurements revealed the high surface area of Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) of about 163.27 m2/g, while VSM showed its excellent magnetic property (20.34 emu/g). The comparison study pointed out the synergistic effect between Fe3O4, κ-Carr, and MIL-125(Ti), forming a composite with an excellent adsorption performance toward o-NP. The adsorption data obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and Freundlich isotherm model was better fitted than Langmuir and Temkin. Furthermore, Langmuir verified the supreme adsorption capacity of o-NP onto Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) since the computed qmax reached 320.26 mg/g at pH 6 and 25 °C. Furthermore, the XPS results postulated that the adsorption mechanism pf o-NP proceeded via H-bonding, π-π interaction, and electron donor-acceptor interactions. Interestingly, Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) composite retained good adsorption characteristics after reusing for five cycles, suggesting its viable applicability as an efficient, renewable, and easy-separable adsorbent for removing nitro aromatic pollutants.

RESUMO

Pure nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) was fabricated under optimum conditions based on material production yield and its efficiency toward acid blue dye-25 decolorization. The optimum prepared bare NZVI was immobilized with two different supports of silica and starch to fabricate their composites nanomaterials. The three different prepared zero-valent iron-based nanomaterials were evaluated for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The silica-modified NZVI recorded the most outstanding removal efficiency for Cr(VI) compared to pristine NZVI and starch-modified NZVI. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was improved under acidic conditions and decreased with raising the initial concentration of Cr(VI). The co-existence of cations, anions, and humic acid reduced Cr(VI) removal efficiency. The removal efficiency was ameliorated from 96.8% to 100% after adding 0.75 mM of H2O2. The reusability of silica-modified NZVI for six cycles of Cr(VI) removal was investigated and the removal mechanism was suggested as the physicochemical process. Based on Langmuir isotherm, the maximal Cr(VI) removal capacity attained 149.25 mg/g. Kinetic and equilibrium data were efficiently fitted using the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively confirming the proposed mechanism. Diffusion models affirmed that the adsorption rate was governed by intraparticle diffusion. Adsorption thermodynamic study suggested the spontaneity and exothermic nature of the adsorption process. This study sheds light on the technology that has potential for magnetic separation and long-term use for effective removal of emerging water pollutants.

RESUMO

The huge development of the industrial sector has resulted in the release of large quantities of phosphate anions which adversely affect the environment, human health, and aquatic ecosystems. Naturally occurring biopolymers have attracted considerable attention as efficient adsorbents for phosphate anions due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmentally-friendly nature, low-cost production, availability in nature, and ease of modification. Amongst them, alginate-based adsorbents are considered one of the most effective adsorbents for removing various types of pollutants from industrial wastewater. The presence of active COOH and OH- groups along the alginate backbone facilitate its physical and chemical modifications and participate in various possible adsorption mechanisms of phosphate anions. Herein, we focus our attention on presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances in phosphate removal by alginate-based adsorbents. Modification of alginate by various materials, including clays, magnetic materials, layered double hydroxides, carbon materials, and multivalent metals, is addressed. The adsorption potentials of these modified forms for removing phosphate anions, in addition to their adsorption mechanisms are clearly discussed. It is concluded that ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base interaction and electrostatic interaction are the most common adsorption mechanisms of phosphate removal by alginate-based adsorbents. Pseudo-2nd order and Freundlich isotherms were figured out to be the major kinetic and isotherm models for the removal process of phosphate. The research findings revealed that some issues, including the high cost of production, leaching, and low efficiency of recyclability of alginate-based adsorbents still need to be resolved. Future trends that could inspire further studies to find the best solutions for removing phosphate anions from aquatic systems are also elaborated, such as the synthesis of magnetic-based alginate and various-shaped alginate nanocomposites that are capable of preventing the leaching of the active materials.

RESUMO

The optimum conditions for the removal of uranium-238, thorium-232, and potassium-40 from wastewater and the discharge of nuclear facilities using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are described. The adsorption mechanism is mainly attributed to chemical interactions between the metal ions and surface functional groups of the CNTs. Batch adsorption experiments are carried out in order to study the effect of different parameters such as pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperatures. Maximum metal removal (>98%) from solutions containing 20-120 Bq/L metal ions is achieved using a contact time of 15 min, a pH of 6.0, and 10 mg/L CNTs. The effect of temperature on the kinetics and equilibrium of adsorption on CNT particles is examined. Consistent with an exothermic reaction, an increase in the temperature resulted in an increase in the adsorption rate. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms are applied to the data obtained at various temperatures. The Langmuir adsorption model is the best for data interpretations. The kinetics of adsorption reveals a pseudo-second-order mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters at 293 K (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) for U-238, Th-232, and K-40 are -14590.7 kJ/mol, -6.66 kJ/mol, and 26.47 J/(mol K), -96,96.5 kJ/mol, -2.48 kJ/mol, and 14.17 J/(mol K), and -3922.09 kJ/mol, -1.32 kJ/mol, and 6.12 J/(mol K), respectively.

RESUMO

In this investigation, we aimed to fabricate easy separable composite microbeads for efficient adsorption of tetracycline (TC) drug. MIL-125(Ti)/MIL-53(Fe) binary metal organic framework (MOF) was synthetized and incorporated with carbon nanotube (CNT) into alginate (Alg) microbeads to form MIL-125(Ti)/MIL-53(Fe)/CNT@Alg composite microbeads. Various tools including FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, Zeta potential and XPS were applied to characterize the composite microbeads. It was found that the specific surface area of MIL-125(Ti)/MIL-53(Fe)/CNT@Alg microbeads was 273.77 m2/g. The results revealed that the adsorption of TC augmented with rising CNT proportion up to 15 wt% in the microbeads matrix. In addition, the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order and well-fitted to Freundlich and Langmuir models with a maximum adsorption capacity of 294.12 mg/g at 25 ◦C and pH 6. Furthermore, thermodynamic study clarified that the TC adsorption process was endothermic, random and spontaneous. Besides, reusability test signified that MIL-125(Ti)/MIL-53(Fe)/CNT@Alg composite microbeads retained superb adsorption properties for six consecutive cycles, emphasizing its potentiality for removing of pharmaceutical residues.

RESUMO

The tremendous development in the industrial sector leads to discharging of the several types of effluents containing detrimental contaminants into water sources. Lately, the proliferation of toxic anions particularly phosphates and nitrates onto aquatic systems certainly depreciates the ecological system and causes a deadly serious problem. Chitosan (Cs) is one of the most auspicious biopolymer adsorbents that are being daily developed for removing of various contaminants from polluted water. This is due to its unparalleled benefits involving biocompatibility, non-toxicity, facile modifications and low-cost production. Nevertheless, chitosan displays considerable drawbacks including low adsorption capacity, low surface area and lack of reusability. Therefore, few findings have been established regarding the aptitude of modified chitosan-based adsorbents towards phosphate and nitrate anions. This review elaborates an overview for the current advances of modified chitosan based-adsorbent for phosphate and nitrate removal, in specific multivalent metals-modified chitosan, clays and zeolite-modified chitosan, magnetic chitosan and carbon materials-modified chitosan. The efforts that have been executed for enriching their adsorption characteristics as well as their possible adsorption mechanisms and reusability were well addressed. Besides, the research conclusions for the optimum adsorption conditions were also discussed, along with emphasizing the foremost research gaps and future potential trends that could motivate further research and innovation to find best solutions for water treatment problems facing the world.

RESUMO

Herein, we report a new metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite beads adsorbent made via incorporating UiO-66 MOF, carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) into sodium alginate for efficient removal of methylene blue dye, and Cu2+ ions. The successful fabrication of the synthesized UiO-66/GOCOOH@SA composite beads was confirmed by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis and BET measurement. The incorporation of both UiO-66 and GOCOOH into SA beads greatly increased their adsorption efficiency for the removal of both MB and Cu2+ with maximum adsorption capacities of 490.72 and 343.49 mg/g, respectively. The removal process of both MB and Cu2+ follows the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich isotherm model. A plausible adsorption mechanism was discussed in detail. Regeneration tests clarified that the removal efficiencies toward both MB and Cu2+ remained higher than 87% after five cycles. These results reveal the potentiality of UiO-66/GOCOOH@SA beads as an excellent adsorbent.

RESUMO

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have become premium candidates for the removal of hazardous contaminants from wastewater. However, MOFs have a vast obstacle which is their poor recyclability. In this study, ZIF-67 was decorated with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and then embedded into aminated chitosan (AmCs) matrix to form core-dual shell Fe3O4/ZIF-67@AmCs composite beads. Diverse analysis tools were utilized to ensure the successful fabrication of the magnetic composite beads. The fabricated magnetic composite beads were examined their adsorptive removal aptitude towards toxic Cr(VI) ions. The gained results refereed that a maximum adsorption capacity of 119.05 mg/g was attained by magnetic Fe3O4/ZIF-67@AmCs composite beads at 25 °C. The process obeyed both of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, and the pseudo 2nd order was more suitable kinetic model to represent the adsorption process. Besides, Fe3O4/ZIF-67@AmCs composite showed an excellent recyclability for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from their aqueous solutions for seven consecutive cycles.

RESUMO

To develop an effective pH-sensitive drug carrier, alginate (Alg), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs), and aminated chitosan (AmCs) derivatives were employed in this study. A simple ionic gelation technique was employed to formulate Alg-CMCs@AmCs dual polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) microcapsules as a pH-sensitive carrier for efficient encapsulation and release of diclofenac sodium (DS) drug. The developed microcapsules were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results clarified that formation of dual PECs significantly protected Alg microcapsules from rapid disintegration at colon conditions (pH 7.4), and greatly reduced their porosity. In addition, the dual PECs microcapsules can effectively encapsulate 95.4% of DS-drug compared to 86.3 and 68.6% for Alg and Alg-CMCs microcapsules, respectively. Higher DS-release values were achieved in simulated colonic fluid [SCF; pH 7.4] compared to those obtained in simulated gastric fluid [SGF; pH 1.2]. Moreover, the drug burst release was prevented and a sustained DS-release was achieved as the AmCs concentration increased. The results confirmed also that the developed microcapsules were biodegradable in the presence of the lysozyme enzyme. These findings emphasize that the formulated pH-sensitive microcapsules could be applied for the delivery of diclofenac sodium.

RESUMO

A zero valent iron-loaded nano-bentonite intercalated carboxymethyl chitosan (nZVI@nBent-CMC) composite was fabricated and characterized by FT-IR, TEM, TEM-EDX, XRD, BET surface area, and zeta potential measurements. The as-fabricated nZVI@nBent-CMC composite exhibited excellent removal efficiency for both anionic Congo red (CR) dye and cationic crystal violet (CV) dye. The maximum uptake capacities of CR and CV onto the nZVI@nBent-CMC composite were found to be 884.95 and 505.05 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process of both dyes well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic data clarified that the adsorptions of both CR and CV onto the nZVI@nBent-CMC composite are spontaneous processes. Moreover, the adsorption of CR onto the nZVI@nBent-CMC composite was found to be an exothermic process while that of CV is an endothermic process. The nZVI@nBent-CMC composite also exhibited excellent reusability for both studied dyes without noticeable loss in the removal efficiency, suggesting its validity to remove both anionic and cationic dyes from wastewater.

RESUMO

An efficient composite adsorbent was fabricated based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) microbeads incorporated carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) for the adsorptive removal of cationic methylene blue dye (MB). The developed CMC/GOCOOH composite microbeads were characterized by means of FTIR, TGA, SEM, XPS, BET and zeta potential analysis tools. Various parameters affecting the removal of MB dye such as the amount of GOCOOH, initial MB concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and medium temperature were optimized using a series of batch adsorption experiments. The experimental data of the adsorption process were more fitted to Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.998) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 180.32 mg/g and followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Moreover, the adsorption of MB dye onto CMC/GOCOOH composite microbeads was an exothermic process with a maximum capacity at pH 10. Besides, the fabricated adsorbent exposed also better reusability for nine repetitive cycles with highly adsorption properties. The gained results imply that the CMC/GOCOOH microbeads could be potentially applied as an effective and reusable adsorbent for MB dye removal from aqueous solutions.

RESUMO

Novel anionic adsorbent microbeads were fabricated based on surface functionalization of p-benzoquinone-carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-PBQ) activated microbeads with iminodiacetic acid (IDA). The developed IDA@CMC-PBQ microbeads were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, SEM, XPS and zeta potential analysis tools. Ion exchange capacity measurements proved the successful generation of extra carboxylic groups on the surface of IDA@CMC-PBQ microbeads with a maximum value reached 3.984 meq/g compared to 1.32 meq/g for neat CMC microbeads. The fabricated microbeads were tested for the removal of cationic crystal violet (CV) dye from aqueous solutions under various adsorption conditions. The results clarified that the removal percent of CV dye was augmented and reached a maximum value of 91.56% with increasing IDA concentration up to 0.15 M. Moreover, the experimental data were well-fitted both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with a maximum adsorption capacity of 107.52 mg/g. while the adsorption process was obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The developed adsorbent displayed respectable reusability after five sequential cycles and exhibited higher adsorption ability towards cationic CV dye compared to cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic methyl orange (MO) dyes. Therefore, IDA@CMC-PBQ adsorbent could be effectually used as a convenient and reusable adsorbent for removing cationic dyes from their aqueous solutions.

RESUMO

This study provides a novel composite as an efficient adsorbent of cationic methylene blue dye. UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary metal organic framework (MOF) was fabricated using a solvothermal technique. Additionally, the developed binary MOF was modified with carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) using a post-synthetic technique. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was analyzed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA, XPS and zeta potential analysis. The adsorption performance of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was examined for its aptitude to adsorb cationic MB dye using a batch technique. The obtained data revealed that, the developed UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited higher adsorption capacity compared to UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies revealed that MB dye adsorption onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite fitted a Langmuir isotherm model (q m = 448.71 mg g-1) and both pseudo 1st order and pseudo 2nd order kinetic models. An intra-particle diffusion model showed that the adsorption process occurs through three steps. Besides, thermodynamic data reflected that the adsorption of MB onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite is an endothermic and spontaneous process and the adsorption involves both physisorption and chemisorption interactions. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited good reusability and can be considered as a promising reusable adsorbent for the treatment of dye-containing industrial effluents with high efficiency.
